How can you make all of the different parts of a lesson accessible to students with communication di PDF Print E-mail
Research taster
Teachers can use multimedia texts to make the curriculum more accessible for students who have communication difficulties. Image  For example:
  •     teachers used digital video to present stories to students; and
  •     students have completed their ‘writing’ tasks in a more diverse manner by combining pictures, sounds and text.

Your evidence
You might like to gather information about how you are using ICT to make your lessons accessible to students who have difficulty with language and communication skills.  Could you keep a record of the ways in which you are using ICT to support these students teaching in different parts of the lesson using the grid below?

Activity

Use of ICT – What software did you use and how?

Explaining new ideas and concepts

Trying out new approaches

Practising and refining skills

Sharing knowledge with others

Moving forward
Now that you have collected evidence about how you are currently using ICT to support these students could you work with a colleague to evaluate what you have found.
  •     Are there any gaps in your use of ICT to increase accessibility of different activities?
  •     Do you make use of a variety of ICT resources to increase access?

Perhaps you could work with your colleagues to create a bank of strategies which you could use to support your students with each of these activities in future lessons?
