What issues does pupil voice raise for teachers to consider? PDF Print E-mail

Taken cumulatively, pupil consultation has revealed some important insights into widely used teaching techniques. Pupils often report that knowing precisely how their work can be improved is more valuable to them than general instructions about working harder or writing more. Likewise, some find target-setting difficult to understand. Pupils report that, rather than giving pupils an idea of how they are performing and what they need to do to improve, targets can represent an obscure hurdle.  To be helpful, targets need to be accompanied by a precise and detailed explanation of the goal.Image


Your evidence
Self-assessment is at least as important for teachers as it is for pupils.  You might like to think about your own goals and self-assessment goals in the light of the finding about the need for precise and detailed goals. You could choose some of the development goals you have set for your pupils recently and use these to prompt parallel development goals you could have set for your own practice.  Completing a grid similar to the one below might help you to map out specific success criteria for a) your own contribution and b) pupil outcomes.

Moving forward
Having explored your own personal development profile in the context of some goals you have set for your students in the past, you might like to use this approach to plan for some future development.  This may need some initial prioritisation, so to help you to decide which areas to work on first you could make a list of your personal views of features of school and class life, including your special areas of interest. What do you think is important and what gives you cause for concern? How might your interests and concerns affect your personal goal-setting?

Creating and using this list may help you disentangle your own and your pupils’ contributions, reflect objectively and choose areas for further self assessment that are important to you.
