How can we help pupils see the importance of recognising when they don’t understand? PDF Print E-mail
Research taster
How you deal with situations where pupils find their work difficult is an important part of developing their skills of self-assessment. The language you use can give the message to pupils that it is OK to find things difficult and that recognising this is an important part of learning. Teachers have found that introducing a framework of questions for reflecting on learning such as:
  •     have you learned anything new?
  •     what were you most pleased with?
  •     what did you find easy?
  •     what did you find more difficult?
  •     what helped you to solve your difficulty?
can help pupils to develop confidence in pointing out areas in which they feel they need support, as well as areas in which they feel they were successful  Image.

Your evidence
When your pupils have completed a particular piece of work, you may like to use the framework of questions suggested above with a selection of pupils, either individually or in small groups. You might like to consider whether all your pupils appear happy to admit to their difficulties. You may also like to consider any common patterns in what your pupils tell you.

Moving forward

You could discuss with a colleague or mentor the difficulties your pupils commonly experienced and how you could help them to overcome them in future lessons. You may also like to discuss how you might encourage pupils who appear reticent to open up to you. One aspect you could consider for example, is whether you think the body language you use helps to convey the message you intend (for instance, do you appear calm, warm, accepting, gentle?) You could decide on some positive gestures you could try with these pupils and monitor the impact of them.
