How can we help pupils understand what successful work looks like? PDF Print E-mail
Research taster
It is important that pupils understand what counts as success in different curriculum areas and at different stages in their development as learners. We can do this by sharing success criteria with our pupils. But simply giving pupils a set of ‘quality’ or ‘success’ criteria is unlikely to help them understand them. Pupils are more likely to understand the criteria if they are given the chance to see what they mean in the context of their own work. One way of doing this is to use examples of pupils’ work to show what the criteria look like in practice. These don’t have to be exemplary examples. Pupils can learn from seeing work that is just a little better than the standard they currently achieve Image.

Your evidence
You could explore your pupils’ understanding of what counts as success during a class discussion or through a writing task.  You could choose a particular topic such as writing, give them some samples and ask them to identify aspects which they think are particularly effective and perhaps others which are less effective. You might also like to ask them to explain why they think the examples are effective etc.  You could then review what you have learned about your pupils’ knowledge of what helps to make a piece of work successful.  Does what they tell you relate to the standard of the work they currently produce?

Moving forward
After reflecting on the criteria your pupils are currently applying to their work, you may like to identify areas where your pupils commonly seem to have most difficulty and consider how you could help them to develop in these areas.
